atelier c hosts Youth ArchiDesign Competition 2024

At the 3rd Youth ArchiDesign Competition, young people across the globe are invited to design ‘instant homes’ influenced by the natural world. Hosted by Atelier C’s 3DWOW Architecture Library (also called ‘the Library), this design challenge is a dynamic space for young designers aged 6-17 to experience the competition structure, from ideation and prototyping through to final deliverables. To foster international participation, the 2024 event introduces a tailor-made, accessibility-oriented submission platform that provides support to its diverse spectrum of participants.

A part of the educational and cultural mission of Atelier C, the institution behind the Youth ArchiDesign Competition, is to support young designers in the creative competition process. By participating, students undergo a thorough cycle encompassing concept creation, development, reviews, modeling, execution, and presentation. This immersive experience not only exposes them to the works of their peers but gives young people the soft and hard skills relevant to a creative career in the future.

creating a nature-inspired, compact home

Designers start by choosing a living thing in the natural world, like an animal, insect, or plant. Inspired by the selection’s organic features and shapes, the challenge asks participants to build an ‘Instant Home’ that can be assembled within 24 hours. This challenge necessitates the homes to cater to families (comprising at least one adult and one child), providing an environment conducive to both study and daily activities. Each design must thoughtfully include two beds, a child-friendly writing desk or table (roughly 60cm x 90cm x 75cm), and a washroom area, which can be shared or private and should encompass a toilet, washing basin, and shower. Incorporating a 4 sqm glass area for windows, designs should offer both openable and fixed glazed sections to introduce natural light. Remember successful applications will emphasize Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), as outlined by the United Nations.

a platform and jury for young participations online

Thanks to Atelier C transitioning to its custom-made digital submission platform, it has enabled the institution to provide global assistance for a diverse group of young participants engaging with the event. This includes comprehensive guidelines for submitting via most mobile devices and computers, and robust web security measures to ensure online safety for the young entrants. To ensure a secure and monitored environment, the competition commits to real-person oversight of all aspects until the event’s conclusion on March 31, 2024. Furthermore, with the generous support of the Eva Chan Scholarship of Sustainable Development, the 3DWOW Architecture Library now extends its assistance to a broader audience, specifically catering to blind and visually impaired users of the library website.

The competition has two participating groups: juniors (age 6-10) and seniors (age 11-17). Any student in these age ranges are eligible to participate, regardless of location and without a limit on the number of submissions. The projects will be assessed by a jury of industry experts across the architecture discipline, including designboom Managing Director Tim Spears. Once the judges complete their reviews, the submitted projects will be collected, curated, and share online by the Library. Results will be announced at M-XPO, the Annual Symposium & Exhibition, on March 31, 2024 with the Top 10 award (Junior) and Top 10 award (Senior). Each laureate will win a cash prize of 1,000HKD, with all participants receiving a certificate.
